How to Identify Your HP Desktop Model

Your HP desktop model number is displayed in several places:

  • Front Bezel: Look for the product name and model number on the front of the chassis (e.g., “EliteDesk 800 G10”).
  • System Information (Windows): Right-click This PC → Properties → search for “System Information” → look for “System Model”.
  • Windows Run Dialog: Press Win+R, type “msinfo32”, and press Enter. Check “System Model” field.
  • Service Tag: A 10-character code on the back of the chassis. Enter this at HP Support to view exact specifications.
  • BIOS/UEFI: Restart your computer and press F2, F10, or Del during startup to enter BIOS and view hardware details.

HP Desktop RAM Upgrade Step-by-Step

Step 1: Power Down and Unplug

Shut down your HP desktop completely. Unplug the power cable from the rear of the unit. Wait 30 seconds for residual power to discharge.

Step 2: Open the Case

Locate the side panel release. Most HP desktops use a simple slide-latch or thumb screw on the rear panel. Gently pull the panel toward you to open.

Step 3: Find RAM Slots

RAM slots are located near the CPU, typically color-coded (blue or black). Note the position of any existing RAM modules for reference.

Step 4: Remove Old RAM (If Replacing)

Press the release clips on both ends of the RAM module. The module will pop up at approximately 45 degrees. Carefully remove it.

Step 5: Install New RAM

Align the notch on the bottom of the new RAM module with the key in the slot. Insert at approximately 45 degrees, then press firmly down until both clips snap into place.

Step 6: Close and Power On

Replace the side panel and secure it. Reconnect the power cable and press the power button. Windows will automatically detect the new RAM.

HP Desktop SSD Upgrade Guide

Most HP desktops (2018+) feature at least one M.2 NVMe slot, which supports the fastest SSDs available. Some models also have SATA options.

Locating Your M.2 Slot

Open the case and look for a small slot labeled “M.2” on the motherboard, typically located near the chipset. You’ll see either one or multiple slots depending on your model.

Installation Steps

  1. Power off completely and disconnect the power cable.
  2. Open the case and locate the M.2 slot(s).
  3. If a small screw is present, remove it and set the standoff bracket aside.
  4. Gently insert your NVMe SSD at a 30-degree angle into the slot.
  5. Push down firmly and secure with the screw.
  6. Close the case, reconnect power, and boot into BIOS (usually F2 or F10) to verify the drive is detected.
