M.2 SSD Sizes Explained — 2230, 2242, 2260 and 2280

M.2 SSDs come in several physical sizes, and installing the wrong size will not fit your device. This guide explains the M.2 form factor naming convention and which size you need for your laptop, desktop, or NAS.

The four-digit number represents the dimensions in millimetres: width x length. 2230 means 22mm wide, 30mm long. 2280 means 22mm wide, 80mm long. All M.2 SSDs are 22mm wide — only the length varies. The most common sizes are 2230, 2242, and 2280.

M.2 2280 — The Standard

2280 (80mm) is the most common M.2 size, used in the vast majority of desktop motherboards, standard laptops, and NAS devices. If a product lists “M.2 SSD support” without specifying size, it almost certainly means 2280. Popular 2280 SSDs include the Samsung 990 Pro, WD Black SN850X, and Kingston KC3000.

M.2 2230 — Compact Format

2230 (30mm) is used in ultra-thin devices, the Steam Deck, Microsoft Surface, Dell XPS, and some ultrabooks. The shorter length limits capacity — 2230 SSDs typically top out at 2TB. The WD SN740, Samsung PM991a, and Sabrent Rocket 2230 are popular options.

NVMe vs SATA M.2 — The Key Difference

M.2 is just a physical form factor — it supports two different interfaces. NVMe M.2 (M-key connector) uses PCIe lanes for speeds up to 14,000 MB/s. SATA M.2 (B+M key connector) uses the SATA interface, capped at 550 MB/s. Modern devices almost exclusively use NVMe. Check your motherboard specifications to confirm which interface is supported.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a 2230 SSD in a 2280 slot?

Yes, with an adapter. Many motherboards also have a screw hole at the 2230 position. The reverse (2280 in 2230 slot) is not possible.

Are all M.2 SSDs NVMe?

No. Some M.2 SSDs use the SATA interface (B+M key). Check the specifications — NVMe SSDs use the M-key connector.

What M.2 size does the Steam Deck use?

The Steam Deck uses M.2 2230 NVMe SSDs.
