What Z790 Adds

Z790 adds PCIe 5.0 for both GPU and SSD slots (Z690 has PCIe 5.0 for GPU only), more USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 ports, and native support for 13th/14th Gen Intel. Z690 supports 12th and 13th Gen (with BIOS update). Both use LGA 1700 socket and support DDR4 or DDR5 depending on model.
Should You Upgrade from Z690?
No. If you already have a Z690 motherboard, upgrading to Z790 provides minimal benefit. The PCIe 5.0 SSD slot is the main addition, and PCIe 4.0 SSD performance is more than adequate for all current workloads. Save your money for a platform change.
Which to Buy New?
For new builds, Z790 boards are now similarly priced to Z690 equivalents. Choose Z790 for new purchases. Choose Z690 only if you find a significant discount or already have a 12th Gen CPU.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Z690 still good in 2026?
