Laptop SSD Compatibility Guide (2026) — NVMe, SATA, M.2 Sizes Explained

Replacing or upgrading your laptop’s SSD is the single biggest performance improvement you can make — faster boot times, quicker file access, and more storage for the price. But laptop SSDs come in different sizes, interfaces, and protocols, and buying the wrong one means it either won’t fit or won’t work. This laptop SSD compatibility guide covers everything you need to get it right.

We’ll walk through M.2 form factors, NVMe vs SATA differences, PCIe generations, and exactly how to identify what your laptop supports — plus the best SSDs to buy in 2026.

M.2 Key Types Explained

The M.2 connector uses a keying system to prevent you from installing an incompatible drive. The key type determines which protocols (NVMe or SATA) the drive supports and which slot it fits into.

Key TypeNotch PositionProtocols SupportedTypical SpeedCommon Use
M-keySingle notch on rightPCIe x4 (NVMe)3,500–12,000 MB/sAll modern NVMe SSDs
B-keySingle notch on leftSATA, PCIe x2Up to 560 MB/sOlder M.2 SATA drives, Wi-Fi cards
B+M keyNotches on both sidesSATA or PCIe x2Up to 1,000 MB/sUniversal M.2 SATA, fits both slot types

The practical rule: If your laptop was made after 2018, it almost certainly has an M-key slot that accepts NVMe drives. If you have an older laptop, check whether the slot is B-key (SATA only) before buying an NVMe drive — an NVMe M-key drive physically cannot fit into a B-key slot. Read our detailed NVMe vs SATA slot guide.

M.2 Form Factors: 2230 vs 2242 vs 2280

The four-digit number refers to the physical dimensions of the drive in millimetres. All M.2 drives are 22mm wide — the difference is the length.

Form FactorDimensionsCommon DevicesCapacity Range
223022 × 30mmSurface Pro/Laptop, Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Dell XPS 13 (some configs)256GB–2TB
224222 × 42mmSelect ultrabooks, older Lenovo models128GB–1TB
228022 × 80mm99% of standard laptops — ThinkPad, XPS 15, Legion, EliteBook, most gaming laptops250GB–8TB

Critical: A 2280 drive will not fit in a 2230 slot — it’s 50mm too long and will physically collide with other components. A 2230 drive can sit in a 2280 slot with a spacer/standoff adapter, but this requires a specific bracket. Read our 2280 vs 2230 guide.

PCIe Gen 3 vs Gen 4 vs Gen 5: Which Do You Need?

PCIe generation determines the maximum theoretical speed of your NVMe drive. But real-world performance differences are smaller than the spec sheets suggest.

SpecificationPCIe Gen 3PCIe Gen 4PCIe Gen 5
Max Sequential Read~3,500 MB/s~7,000 MB/s~12,000 MB/s
Max Sequential Write~3,000 MB/s~6,500 MB/s~10,000 MB/s
Boot Time~8 seconds~8 seconds~8 seconds
Game Load TimeNear-identicalNear-identicalNear-identical
Large File Transfer (100GB+)~30 seconds~15 seconds~9 seconds
Price per TB (2026)£35–50£40–80£60–120
Thermal ConcernsMinimalLowCan throttle in thin laptops

Bottom line: PCIe Gen 4 is the sweet spot in 2026. Gen 3 is still perfectly adequate for everyday use. Gen 5 only makes sense for sustained large file transfers — video editors and data scientists will notice the difference, but most users won’t.

An important compatibility note: Gen 4 drives work in Gen 3 slots (they just run at Gen 3 speeds) and Gen 3 drives work in Gen 4 slots. PCIe is backward compatible. You can’t break anything by installing the wrong generation — you just might not get maximum speed.

How to Check Which SSD Your Laptop Supports

Method 1: CrystalDiskInfo (Windows — Free)

Download CrystalDiskInfo and check the “Interface” field. It will show “NVMe” or “SATA” and the drive model. The “Transfer Mode” field shows whether you’re running PCIe 3.0 or 4.0.

Method 2: Device Manager (Windows)

Open Device Manager → Disk drives. The model name typically includes “NVMe” for NVMe drives. Right-click → Properties → Details → Hardware IDs for exact interface information.

Method 3: Physical Inspection

Remove the bottom panel of your laptop (most require a Phillips screwdriver) and look at the M.2 slot. Count the notches on the connector: one notch on the right = M-key (NVMe), one on the left = B-key (SATA), notches on both sides = B+M (usually SATA). Also check for a standoff screw at the 2230, 2242, or 2280 position to confirm the supported length.

Method 4: Service Manual

Search for “[your laptop model] service manual” on the manufacturer’s support site. This is the most reliable method — it will specify exactly which M.2 sizes and interfaces are supported.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will an NVMe SSD work in a SATA M.2 slot?

No. NVMe drives use an M-key connector which physically won’t fit into a B-key SATA slot. Even B+M key slots that accept both connectors will only run SATA protocol — an NVMe drive installed in a B+M slot typically won’t be detected. Read our full NVMe vs SATA slot guide.

Can I put a 2280 SSD in a 2230 slot?

No. A 2280 drive is 50mm longer than a 2230 and will physically overhang other components. You can go the other direction — a 2230 drive fits in a 2280 slot with a spacer adapter. Read our M.2 size compatibility guide.

Is PCIe Gen 4 worth it over Gen 3?

For most users, no. Boot times and application loading are nearly identical. Gen 4 only shows meaningful improvement for sustained large file transfers (100GB+). That said, Gen 4 prices have dropped so close to Gen 3 that there’s little reason not to buy Gen 4 if your laptop supports it.

Can I use a Gen 4 SSD in a Gen 3 laptop?

Yes. PCIe is backward compatible. A Gen 4 drive will work in a Gen 3 slot — it simply runs at Gen 3 speeds (capped around 3,500 MB/s). Nothing will be damaged, and you’ll benefit from the full Gen 4 speed if you later move the drive to a Gen 4 system.

How much SSD storage do I actually need?

For most users, 1TB is the sweet spot in 2026. Windows 11 plus common applications take around 80–120GB. A 512GB drive fills up surprisingly fast once you add documents, photos, and a few games. If you work with video, design files, or large datasets, consider 2TB.

Can I clone my old laptop SSD to a new one?

Yes. Free tools like Macrium Reflect (Windows) or Carbon Copy Cloner (Mac) can clone your existing drive to a new SSD. You’ll need a USB-to-M.2 enclosure to connect the new drive externally, clone the data across, then physically swap the drives.
