Two upgrades change how a laptop feels day to day: replacing the drive with an SSD, and adding memory. They fix different problems, so which one is right depends on what your machine already has — and on what it is actually doing when it feels slow.
The short answer
- Still booting from a mechanical hard drive? Fit an SSD. For most older laptops this is the single change you will notice most.
- Already on an SSD, with 8 GB of RAM or less, and you keep a lot open? Memory is the next step.
- Already on an SSD with 16 GB and it still drags? The bottleneck is probably neither — see when neither upgrade is the answer.
What each upgrade actually changes
What an SSD improves
A mechanical hard drive has to move a physical head to reach each piece of data. That mechanical delay is what you feel when the machine takes a long time to reach the desktop, when an application sits on its splash screen, or when everything stalls the moment something starts reading from disk in the background. An SSD has no moving parts and handles many small, scattered reads at once, so those particular waits largely disappear.
The size of the improvement depends on the drive, the interface your laptop supports and how the machine is used, so treat any specific “X times faster” figure with caution — including on other pages of this site. We publish manufacturer-rated speeds where they are relevant, not timings we have measured ourselves.
What more RAM improves
Memory decides how much your laptop can hold open at once. When the things you are running no longer fit, the operating system starts moving data between memory and the drive to cope, and everything becomes sluggish — switching between windows, returning to a browser tab you left an hour ago, working with large files.
The important qualification: adding memory only helps if you are running out of it. Beyond the point where your workload fits comfortably, more RAM will not make a single task run faster. That is why it is worth checking before you buy rather than assuming.
How to tell which one you need
On Windows
Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and go to the Performance tab.
- Memory shows how much is installed, how much is in use and how much is committed, along with the form factor, speed and how many slots are occupied. If “in use” sits close to the total during normal work, you are memory-bound.
- Disk names the drive and reports its type. If it shows as HDD, that is your answer.
For a closer look, Resource Monitor’s Memory tab shows hard faults per second — sustained hard faults mean the machine is leaning on the drive because memory has run out.
On macOS
Open Activity Monitor and choose the Memory tab. The Memory Pressure graph is the figure that matters: green means you have headroom, and persistent yellow or red under ordinary use means you do not. A large and growing Swap Used value points the same way.
Before you buy: check what your laptop accepts
This is where upgrades go wrong. Neither part is universal, and a good number of laptops will not take either one.
- Memory is often soldered. Thin-and-light designs and most modern MacBooks use memory soldered to the board, which cannot be changed after purchase. A small number of recent models instead use replaceable LPCAMM2 modules — the Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 was among the first — but this is still the exception rather than the rule.
- Slot count and maximum capacity vary by model, and so does the memory type (DDR4, DDR5, LPDDR5 and so on). Two laptops from the same range can differ.
- M.2 slots are not interchangeable. The common size is M.2 2280, but 2242 and 2230 also exist. A slot may accept NVMe, SATA, or both, and the keying differs. Some older machines use a 2.5-inch SATA bay instead.
Confirm against your own model before ordering. For anything you are spending real money on, check the manufacturer’s service manual or specification sheet as well — that is the primary source, and it is the one we work from.
If you are doing both, do them in one session
Most laptops that allow one upgrade allow the other, and opening the chassis once is easier than doing it twice. A sensible order:
- Back up first. Everything else assumes you have a copy of your data.
- Fit the SSD, then either clone the old drive or do a clean install. A clean install takes longer but leaves you without whatever had accumulated on the old one.
- Fit the memory while the machine is still open.
- Keep the old drive until you have confirmed the new setup boots and your files are intact.
Power the laptop down fully and disconnect the internal battery connector if the design allows it, and take basic anti-static precautions. Check your model’s warranty terms before you open it — the rules differ between manufacturers and between regions.
When neither upgrade is the answer
If the machine already has an SSD and enough memory and still feels slow, look at these before spending anything:
- Thermals. Blocked vents and clogged fans cause the processor to throttle. This is common in laptops several years old and costs nothing to check.
- Drive health. An SSD that is failing, or one that is nearly full, behaves badly. Check its SMART status.
- Startup software. Programs that load with the machine are a frequent cause of a slow boot on an otherwise capable laptop.
- The workload itself. Some tasks are limited by the processor or graphics, and no amount of memory or storage will change that.

Should I upgrade RAM or SSD first?
If the laptop still boots from a mechanical hard drive, fit the SSD first — it changes boot times, application launches and general responsiveness more than anything else you can add. If you already have an SSD and 8 GB of RAM or less, memory is the next step. If your budget covers both, do them in that order.
Will adding RAM make my laptop faster?
Only if you are running out of it. Extra memory helps when you keep many applications or browser tabs open, or run memory-hungry software such as video or photo editing. If you already have headroom, more will not speed up a single task — check Task Manager or Activity Monitor before you buy.
Is 16 GB of RAM enough, or should I get an SSD?
For most people 16 GB is comfortable. If you have 16 GB and no SSD, storage is the priority. If you have both and the machine still drags, look at drive health, background software and cooling rather than buying more memory.
How much difference does an SSD actually make?
Moving from a mechanical hard drive to an SSD is the largest single change most older laptops can have — boot, application launch, file copying and switching between programs all improve, because there is no moving head to reposition for each read. The exact gain depends on the drive and the machine, so treat specific quoted figures with caution; we do not publish timings we have not measured.
Can I upgrade RAM and SSD at the same time?
Usually yes, provided your model has both an accessible M.2 slot and memory slots. Doing both in one session means opening the chassis only once. Back up first, and confirm what your model accepts before ordering anything.
What is the cheapest way to speed up my laptop?
Start with what is free: remove software you do not use, cut what launches at startup, check the drive’s health and clear the vents and fan. If it still feels slow and it has a mechanical drive, the SSD is the upgrade that gives you the most for your money.
