Alienware m16 R2 — RAM, SSD and Charger Compatibility

The Alienware m16 R2 is Dell’s 16-inch gaming laptop for 2024, built on Intel’s Core Ultra H-series rather than the HX parts used by the larger m18. It is one of the more serviceable machines in its class: both memory slots and both M.2 slots are user-accessible behind the base panel.

Memory

The m16 R2 has two DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM slots with nothing soldered to the board, so all of the memory is replaceable. Dell supports configurations from 8GB up to 64GB (2 × 32GB).

Fit a matched pair rather than a single stick. This is a discrete-GPU machine and single-channel memory measurably hurts frame rates in GPU-bound titles as well as anything that leans on the integrated Arc graphics.

Storage

There are two M.2 slots, and each accepts either a 2230 or a 2280 drive at PCIe Gen4 x4. Dell supports up to 4TB per slot in 2280 form and 1TB in 2230.

There is no 2.5-inch bay, so both drives must be M.2.

Power and charging

The m16 R2 ships with a 280W adapter, or a 240W small-form-factor unit on lower configurations. Both use a 7.40 × 5.10 mm barrel connector at 19.5V.

It cannot be charged over USB-C. The Thunderbolt 4 port carries 15W of Power Delivery, which is enough for peripherals and trickle charging but nowhere near enough to run the machine.

Before you buy a part

Check the exact model badge before ordering. The m16 R2 is frequently confused with the m18 R2, an 18-inch machine with Core i9 HX processors, an RTX 4090 option and a 330W adapter — nothing about its memory, storage or power is interchangeable with the m16.

What we could not confirm

Dell documents a single display option for this machine (QHD+ 240Hz), and does not state whether its 2.60 kg figure is a minimum or a typical weight. If a listing offers a different panel, verify it against the service tag before buying.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upgrade the RAM in the Alienware m16 R2?

Yes. It has two DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM slots with no soldered memory, supporting up to 64GB as two 32GB modules.

Can I add a second SSD?

Yes. There are two M.2 slots, each taking a 2230 or 2280 drive at PCIe Gen4 x4.

Can I charge it over USB-C?

No. It uses a 7.40 × 5.10 mm barrel connector at 240W or 280W. The Thunderbolt port supplies only 15W.

Does the m16 R2 come with an RTX 4080?

No. The GPU options are the RTX 4050, 4060 and 4070. An RTX 4080 or 4090 in a Dell 16-inch chassis points to a different machine.

Correction note: this page previously covered a “Dell G16 7640”. No such machine exists: Dell’s G-series ended with the G15 5530 and G16 7630, and for the 2024 model year Dell moved its 16-inch gaming line to Alienware entirely. It has been rewritten to cover the Alienware m16 R2, which is the product readers looking for that name are most likely to want. Specifications here are taken from the manufacturer’s own documentation.
