Dell XPS Series — Upgrade Guide
The XPS line has moved heavily towards soldered components in 2024–2025. The XPS 13, XPS 14, and XPS 16 all use soldered LPDDR5X memory that cannot be upgraded after purchase. Only the XPS 15 retains user-accessible SO-DIMM slots — making it the last truly upgradeable XPS.
XPS 13 (9340/9345)
The current XPS 13 uses soldered LPDDR5X RAM configured at the factory (16GB, 32GB, or 64GB). The SSD is a single M.2 2280 NVMe Gen 4 slot that can be replaced, though it requires removing the bottom panel. The charger is a compact 45W USB-C PD unit — any 45W+ USB-C PD charger will work as a replacement.
Upgrade options: SSD only (M.2 2280 NVMe). RAM is not upgradeable.
XPS 15 (9530/9540)
The XPS 15 is the upgrade-friendly exception in the XPS range. It features two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots supporting up to 64GB (2×32GB) at 5600 MHz, plus two M.2 2280 NVMe slots. The 130W USB-C PD charger can be replaced with any 100W+ USB-C PD charger — though full performance under load may require the original 130W.

The Latitude range is Dell’s most upgrade-friendly laptop line. The 5000 series has user-accessible DDR5 SO-DIMM slots, but this is not true across the whole range — the premium 7000 series moved to soldered LPDDR5x. Latitude 5450/5550 (Business)
Two DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM slots, up to 64GB. Single M.2 2280 NVMe Gen 4 slot. 65W USB-C PD charger. No Thunderbolt — standard USB-C only. This is Dell’s workhorse business laptop with excellent upgradeability at a mid-range price.
Latitude 7450 and 7650 (Premium Business)
Unlike the 5000 series, the Latitude 7450 has its memory soldered — Dell’s owner’s manual states the memory is integrated on the system board and is not upgradable, with LPDDR5x up to 64GB fixed at the point of purchase. Only the SSD can be changed afterwards. Build quality is better and Thunderbolt 4 is optional. There is no Latitude 7550. Dell’s premium 7000 line runs 7350, 7440, 7450 and 7455, with the 7650 as the large-screen model — so if a listing offers you memory for a “Latitude 7550”, check the service tag before you buy. If you want a Latitude you can actually add memory to, the 5000 series is the one: Dell’s owner’s manual for the Latitude 5550 specifies two SO-DIMM slots, DDR5 at 5600 MT/s on Core Ultra models, up to 64GB.

Dell Inspiron Series — Upgrade Guide
The Inspiron range covers Dell’s consumer laptops. Upgradeability varies by model — the Inspiron 15/16 Plus (DDR5 variants) have two SO-DIMM slots, while some budget Inspiron 14 models have partially soldered RAM. Always check the specific model number before purchasing upgrade parts.
Most Inspiron models use a single M.2 2280 NVMe SSD and a 45–65W USB-C PD charger. The Inspiron 16 Plus may have two M.2 slots in higher configurations.
Dell Alienware Series — Upgrade Guide
Alienware gaming laptops offer the best upgradeability in Dell’s lineup. The m16 and m18 both feature two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots (up to 64GB) and two M.2 NVMe SSD slots supporting up to 8–10TB of combined storage.

Note there is no Precision 7690: the 16-inch 7000-series workstation is the 7680 and the 17-inch is the 7780. The 7000 series has two M.2 NVMe SSD slots, while the Precision 5690 has LPDDR5x soldered to the board and cannot be upgraded at all.
Charging differs across the range. The Precision 5690 uses 100W or 165W USB-C — the 165W adapter runs a 28V Extended Power Range profile, so it needs a USB-IF 240W-rated cable — while the 7680 and 7780 use a 180W or 240W 7.4×5.1mm barrel adapter at 19.5V. Thunderbolt 4 is included across the range, so any Thunderbolt dock will work for multi-monitor setups, though a dock that delivers only 130W cannot meet the 5690’s 165W specification.

Thunderbolt 4 is common across the Dell XPS, Latitude 7000 and Precision lines, but it is not universal — the Latitude 5450 and 5550 expose USB-C without Thunderbolt, so check your own model’s port list before buying a Thunderbolt dock. Alienware and G-Series have at least one Thunderbolt 4 port alongside proprietary power connectors.
