Framework Laptop 13 (Ryzen AI 300 Series) Specifications
Correction (September 2026): this page previously described a “Framework Laptop 13 AMD 8040” with Ryzen 5 8640U / Ryzen 7 8840U processors. Framework never shipped an 8040-series mainboard — the AMD line went from the Ryzen 7040 Series board straight to the Ryzen AI 300 Series board, which is what this page now covers. The maximum memory and charger figures have been corrected at the same time: the official ceiling is 96GB, not 64GB.
The Framework Laptop 13 (Ryzen AI 300 Series) is Framework’s current 13-inch AMD mainboard, built around AMD Strix Point silicon. As with every Framework, the point of the machine is that the memory, storage, wireless card, ports, screen and keyboard are all meant to be replaced by the owner. This guide covers what actually fits.
| Component | Specification |
|---|---|
| Processor | Ryzen AI 5 340 (6-core) / Ryzen AI 7 350 (8-core) / Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 (12-core) |
| RAM | DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM, 2 slots (user-replaceable) |
| Max RAM | 96GB officially supported |
| Storage | 1 × M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe Gen 4 |
| Charger | USB-C Power Delivery; Framework’s own adapter is 60W |
| Ports | 4 × Expansion Card bays — 2 bays are USB4, 2 are USB 3.2; all four carry display output |
| Wireless | Wi-Fi 7 (AMD RZ717), replaceable M.2 card |
| Battery | 61Wh |
| Display | 13.5″ 3:2 (2256×1504), 2880×1920 120Hz option |
Memory Upgrade Path
The board has two DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM slots, both user-accessible, with an official maximum of 96GB (2 × 48GB). That 96GB figure is the one to plan around — it is higher than the 64GB most laptop pages quote, because 48GB non-binary modules are supported.
Fit two matched modules where you can. Strix Point’s integrated Radeon graphics share system memory and are noticeably faster in dual-channel, so two 16GB modules beat one 32GB module for anything graphical.

Storage Expansion
One M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe Gen 4 slot. There is no second M.2 position on the 13-inch board, so adding capacity means replacing the drive rather than supplementing it — or using a Storage Expansion Card in one of the four bays, which is Framework’s own answer to the problem and gives you up to 1TB on a removable module.

Charger Compatibility
The Framework Laptop 13 charges over USB-C Power Delivery through any of its four expansion bays, and Framework’s own adapter is a 60W unit. Any reputable USB-C PD charger rated 60W or above will run and charge it.
Below 60W the machine still charges, just slowly, and under sustained load a 30W or 45W charger will lose ground to the battery rather than gaining on it. There is no proprietary barrel connector to worry about here — this is one of the few laptops where a good third-party GaN charger is a genuinely equivalent replacement.
| Charger | Wattage | Type | Price* |

Ports and Docking
Four Expansion Card bays, which you populate yourself with USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, DisplayPort, MicroSD, Ethernet or Storage modules. On the Ryzen AI 300 board two of the four bays are USB4 and two are USB 3.2; all four support display output. Put your high-bandwidth modules — a dock, an external GPU enclosure, a fast SSD module — in the USB4 bays, and keep the USB 3.2 bays for a mouse receiver, card reader or Ethernet.
Upgrade Difficulty and Tools
This is about as easy as laptop servicing gets. The bottom cover is held by captive fasteners, everything inside is labelled with a QR code linking to its own guide, and Framework publishes full repair documentation for every part.
Tools needed:
- The bundled Framework screwdriver, or a T5 Torx / Phillips PH0
- ESD wrist strap (optional but sensible)
Back up before you start, and do read Framework’s official guide for your board revision rather than a generic one.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the maximum RAM for the Framework Laptop 13 (Ryzen AI 300 Series)?
96GB of DDR5-5600, as 2 × 48GB SO-DIMMs. This is Framework’s official figure; the commonly quoted 64GB ceiling is too low for this board.
Can I add a second SSD?
Not internally — there is one M.2 2280 slot. You can add a Framework Storage Expansion Card in one of the four bays, or replace the internal drive with a larger one.
What charger does it need?
Any USB-C Power Delivery charger of 60W or more. Framework’s own adapter is 60W. There is no barrel connector.
Was there ever a Framework Laptop 13 with AMD 8040 chips?
No. Framework’s AMD mainboards for the 13-inch went Ryzen 7040 Series, then Ryzen AI 300 Series. There was no 8040-series board, so listings claiming a Ryzen 5 8640U or Ryzen 7 8840U Framework 13 are describing a machine that was never sold.
Which bays are the fast ones?
Two of the four are USB4 on this board and two are USB 3.2. Check Framework’s bay diagram for your board revision before committing a dock or eGPU to a particular corner.
