MSI dominates the gaming and creator laptop markets with one of the most comprehensive upgrade ecosystems available. Most MSI gaming models — from the flagship Titan to the budget Cyborg — feature fully upgradeable memory and storage. Even their ultrabooks are more upgrade-friendly than competitors. The trade-off is the Prestige ultrabook line, which uses soldered LPDDR5X memory to achieve thinness.

MSI Gaming Laptops — Titan, Raider, and Stealth

MSI’s gaming lineup spans from the ultra-high-performance Titan 18 HX (18-inch desktop replacement) down to the portable Stealth 14 Studio. All gaming models feature fully user-accessible DDR5 SO-DIMM memory slots — typically two slots per machine — and dual M.2 NVMe SSD bays.

The Titan 18 HX is the king of gaming: an 18-inch display (2560×1600 at 240Hz, or a 3840×2400 Mini LED panel), Intel Core Ultra 200HX, RTX 50-series graphics, and up to 96GB of DDR5-6400 across two SO-DIMM slots. Both RAM slots are accessible, and MSI specifies four M.2 slots on the current Titan 18 HX AI — three Gen 4 plus one Gen 5. It ships with a 400W barrel charger, not the 330W unit the rest of the range uses, and it has Thunderbolt 5. One caveat if you are buying memory: the older Titan 18 HX A14V (14th-gen Core i9) is a different machine inside — four SO-DIMM slots, up to 192GB, and three M.2 slots.

The Raider GE78 HX is the standard 17-inch gaming workhorse — MSI lists it as 17″, not 17.3″ — matching the Titan’s 96GB memory ceiling with dual SSD slots and 280W or 330W charging. It is an RTX 40-series machine; MSI has never shipped a GE78 HX with RTX 50 graphics. The Raider GE68 HX scales down to 16 inches and maxes out at 64GB RAM with a 280W charger, but maintains the same upgrade accessibility.

The Stealth 16 Studio is MSI’s portable gaming machine — thin, light, fully upgradeable (64GB RAM, dual SSD, 240W barrel charge). The Stealth 14 Studio is the ultraportable option, 14 inches with DDR5-5200, single SSD slot, and 100W USB-C charging.

RAM Upgrade: DDR5-5600 vs DDR5-5200

Most MSI gaming laptops use DDR5-5600 — faster than the standard DDR5-4800 — for performance headroom. The Stealth 14 Studio and Creator M16 HX use DDR5-5200, which is slightly slower but still excellent for gaming and content creation.

When upgrading, match the speed of your existing module (DDR5-5600 or DDR5-5200) for best performance. Mixing speeds is safe but both modules will run at the slower speed.

SSD Upgrade: Gen 4 vs Gen 5

The Titan 18 HX supports PCIe Gen 5 NVMe in both M.2 slots — currently the fastest gaming laptop SSD platform available. The Raider GE78 HX supports Gen 4. All other MSI models support Gen 4 NVMe.

Gen 5 is overkill for most gaming workloads (real-world speed gains are minimal), but if you own a Titan, go Gen 5 for future-proofing. Gen 4 SSDs are the best value for all other models.

MSI Creator Laptops — Z16 and M16

MSI Creator laptops are optimised for video editors, 3D artists, and content creators. Both models feature dual DDR5 SO-DIMM slots and professional-grade colour accuracy (100% DCI-P3).

The Creator Z16 HX is the flagship — 16 inches, dual SSD slots, DDR5-5600, dual TB4 ports, and 240W barrel charging. It’s one of the best 16-inch creator laptops available. The Creator M16 HX is the more portable option with single SSD slot, DDR5-5200, and 150W barrel charging.

Both Creator models are fully upgradeable — max 64GB DDR5 — and support external Thunderbolt GPU docks for extended creative workflows.

MSI Budget Gaming — Cyborg and Thin

MSI’s budget gaming line offers excellent upgradeability at a lower price point.

The Cyborg 15 is fully upgradeable: two DDR5-4800 SO-DIMM slots (up to 64GB), single M.2 SSD slot, and 120W barrel charging. At its price, you can buy the base configuration and add your own RAM and SSD for significant savings. No Thunderbolt, but otherwise a solid entry-level gaming laptop.

The Thin 15 has two DDR4-3200 SO-DIMM slots and no soldered memory at all, for a maximum of 64GB. Storage is one M.2 2280 NVMe Gen 4 slot plus a 2.5-inch SATA bay. Note this is DDR4, not DDR5 — a DDR5 module will not fit. Unlike Cyborg, Thin prioritises portability and battery life over pure upgradeability.

MSI Prestige — Ultrabook Line

MSI’s Prestige ultrabooks prioritise thinness and weight over upgradeability. Both the Prestige 16 Studio and Prestige 14 use soldered LPDDR5X memory — no upgrades possible after purchase.

The good news: the SSD is still replaceable. Both models feature a single M.2 2280 NVMe slot. However, you must order with the RAM you need at purchase time. Prestige laptops come with 32GB standard (16 Studio) or 32GB (Prestige 14) — which is good for future-proofing, but not upgradeable.

The Prestige 16 AI Studio ships with a 140W USB-C adapter (MSI part ADP-140AB). It will still charge from a lower-wattage USB-C PD charger, but a 100W unit will not sustain full performance under load. The Prestige 14 uses 65W USB-C PD — lower power suitable for its smaller size and lower-power Intel Core Ultra platform.


Charger Compatibility Guide

MSI uses two charger connector types: traditional barrel plugs (for gaming and creator laptops) and USB-C Power Delivery (for ultrabooks and portable models).

Important note on barrel chargers: MSI barrel connector tips vary by wattage. A 120W charger’s tip will not fit a 150W or 240W+ laptop. Always verify the connector diameter and contact pattern before purchasing a replacement third-party charger. When in doubt, buy the official MSI charger for your model.

Can I upgrade the RAM in my MSI Prestige 16?
