RAM Speed Calculator — Bandwidth, Latency & Performance Grade

Use our free RAM Speed Calculator to determine your memory’s effective bandwidth, real-world latency, and whether your current configuration is optimised. Enter your RAM specifications below to get instant results with upgrade recommendations.

How the RAM Speed Calculator Works

Our calculator uses your RAM specifications to compute three key metrics: total memory bandwidth (how much data can flow per second), first-word latency (how quickly the first piece of data is delivered), and an overall performance grade based on current standards.

Understanding Your Results

Total Bandwidth

Bandwidth measures the maximum data throughput of your memory subsystem. Higher bandwidth benefits video editing, 3D rendering, scientific computing, and multitasking. Dual-channel mode doubles bandwidth compared to single-channel, making it one of the most important optimisations for free performance.

First Word Latency

First-word latency measures how quickly the memory responds to a request. It is calculated as (CAS Latency × 2000) ÷ Speed in MHz, giving a result in nanoseconds. Lower is better. While DDR5 has higher CL numbers than DDR4, the higher clock speed partially compensates, resulting in similar real-world latency.

Performance Grade

The overall grade considers both speed and latency relative to the current generation standard. S Tier represents enthusiast-grade memory, A Tier is excellent for most users, B Tier is good for general use, and C Tier suggests an upgrade would provide noticeable improvement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good RAM speed for gaming?

For gaming in 2026, DDR5-5600 CL36 or DDR5-6000 CL30 are the sweet spots. DDR4-3200 CL16 or DDR4-3600 CL16 remain excellent for DDR4 platforms. The calculator will rate these as A or S Tier configurations.

Does RAM speed really matter?

Yes, but capacity matters more. Always ensure you have enough RAM (16GB minimum, 32GB recommended) before optimising speed. Once capacity is sufficient, faster RAM with lower latency provides 3-8% improvement in CPU-bound workloads like gaming at 1080p.

What is the best DDR5 speed for AMD Ryzen?

DDR5-6000 is the sweet spot for AMD Ryzen 7000 and 9000 series processors. At 6000MHz, the memory controller runs in 1:1 ratio with the Infinity Fabric, providing optimal performance. Going above 6000MHz forces a 1:2 ratio that can actually reduce performance.

How do I check my current RAM speed?

On Windows, open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), go to the Performance tab, and click Memory. The speed is shown in MHz. For CAS latency and detailed timings, download CPU-Z (free) and check the Memory and SPD tabs. Make sure XMP or EXPO is enabled in BIOS — your RAM may be running at default JEDEC speeds.
