ASUS spans the full range from budget VivoBooks to premium ZenBooks to high-end ROG gaming machines. The upgrade picture is a mixed bag: ASUS’s gaming and business laptops offer excellent upgradeability, while their ultrabooks have moved almost entirely to soldered components.

ASUS ZenBook Series — Upgrade Guide
The ZenBook is ASUS’s premium ultrabook range. All current models — including the ZenBook 14, ZenBook S14, and ZenBook S16 — use soldered LPDDR5X memory. RAM cannot be upgraded after purchase.
The SSD is typically a single M.2 NVMe Gen 4 slot, though the form factor may vary by model. Most ZenBooks support Thunderbolt 4, and all use 65W USB-C PD charging.

ASUS VivoBook Series — Upgrade Guide
Going further: the memory arrangement differs sharply between VivoBook SKUs that share the same shelf name — some take a SO-DIMM, others have LPDDR5X soldered. Our ASUS VivoBook upgrade guide lists the maximum supported memory and adapter for each model code.
The VivoBook is ASUS’s budget range with surprisingly decent upgradeability on many models. Most VivoBooks still use DDR4 SO-DIMM (ASUS’s budget line has been slower to transition to DDR5), with one or two user-accessible slots.
SSD slots are typically M.2 2280 NVMe, though some budget models may have a second 2.5″ SATA bay. Charger type varies — newer VivoBooks use USB-C PD, but some still ship with barrel plug chargers.
Key warning: Check your specific VivoBook model number carefully. The VivoBook range is enormous and specs vary significantly between configurations. What’s true for a VivoBook 15 X1504 may be completely different from a VivoBook 15 M1502.

ASUS ROG Zephyrus Series — Upgrade Guide

The ROG Zephyrus G14 and G16 are ASUS’s premium thin gaming laptops. They use a soldered memory configuration: ASUS lists 32GB of LPDDR5X on board and states plainly that there is no expansion possible. There is no SO-DIMM slot to add anything to.
The practical consequence is that you must choose your memory at the point of purchase. Both the G14 and the G16 top out at 32GB and neither can be changed later. If you expect to need more than 32GB, buy the ROG Strix G16 or G18 instead — those have two genuine DDR5 SO-DIMM slots and go to 64GB.
Both models have two M.2 NVMe SSD slots, 100W USB-C PD charging, and Thunderbolt 4 ports.
ASUS ROG Strix Series — Upgrade Guide
The ROG Strix G16, G18, and SCAR models are the most upgradeable gaming laptops ASUS makes. Unlike the Zephyrus, these have two full DDR5 SO-DIMM slots — no soldered memory — supporting up to 64GB. They also have two M.2 NVMe SSD slots.
The SCAR 16/18 (2025) supports PCIe Gen 5 NVMe in one of the two M.2 slots, making it one of the first gaming laptops to offer Gen 5 SSD speeds. The Strix G16/G18 uses Gen 4.
Charging is from a barrel adapter — ASUS ships 280W or 330W with the 2024 Strix G16 and 380W with the 2025 SCAR 16. The 100W USB-C input is a travel option only and will not sustain gaming load. Recent SCAR models have moved to Thunderbolt 5.

ASUS TUF Gaming Series — Upgrade Guide

The TUF Gaming A15, A16, and F15 are ASUS’s budget gaming laptops — and they’re excellent for upgrades. All models have two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots (up to 64GB) and two M.2 NVMe SSD slots. At their price point, you can buy the base configuration and upgrade RAM and storage yourself for significant savings.
TUF models ship with a 240W barrel adapter (2024 A15); the 100W USB-C input is a secondary travel option only. Thunderbolt support is limited — most TUF models use USB-C without Thunderbolt.
ASUS ProArt StudioBook — Upgrade Guide
The ProArt StudioBook 16 is ASUS’s workstation for creative professionals. It features two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots (up to 64GB), two M.2 2280 NVMe Gen 4 SSD slots, and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. It is not the only ASUS laptop with dual TB4 — the Zenbook 14 OLED (UX3405) has two as well, per ASUS’s own tech specs, though its memory is soldered LPDDR5X and capped at the configuration you buy. What sets the ProArt apart is the combination of dual TB4 with upgradeable SO-DIMM slots. Charging is 100W USB-C PD.

ASUS ExpertBook Series — Upgrade Guide
The ExpertBook B5 and B7 are ASUS’s business laptops competing with Lenovo ThinkPad and HP EliteBook. Both models offer two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots (up to 32–64GB) and standard M.2 NVMe SSD access. Charging is 65W USB-C PD. Thunderbolt support varies by configuration.
