Lenovo makes some of the most upgrade-friendly laptops on the market — particularly the ThinkPad range, which is purpose-built for serviceability. But upgradeability varies enormously between series. ThinkPad T-series laptops have full SO-DIMM access, while the X1 Carbon and Yoga lines use soldered memory.
This guide covers every current Lenovo laptop series with exact RAM types, SSD compatibility, charger requirements, and upgrade recommendations for 2026. Lenovo is also the first manufacturer to adopt CAMM2 — the new upgradeable memory standard — in the ThinkPad P1 Gen 7.
Memory and storage are only part of the picture. The processor is the one component that is almost never user-serviceable — see whether your ThinkPad’s CPU can be upgraded for which Lenovo models use socketed chips and which are soldered to the board.

ThinkPad T-Series — Upgrade Guide
Going further: upgradeability inside the T-series varies by generation and by processor choice, and several widely-repeated claims about soldered AMD models are wrong. Our ThinkPad T-series upgrade guide works through every generation from Gen 3 onwards against Lenovo PSREF.
The ThinkPad T-series is the gold standard for upgradeable business laptops. Every current T14, T14s, and T16 model has user-accessible DDR5 SO-DIMM slots, standard M.2 2280 NVMe SSD slots, and USB-C PD charging.
ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 (Intel and AMD)
The Gen 5 is fully upgradeable with two DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM slots supporting up to 64GB (2×32GB). It uses a single M.2 2280 NVMe Gen 4 SSD slot and a 65W USB-C PD charger. Both Intel and AMD variants have Thunderbolt 4 ports.
Important note: The older T14 Gen 4 has a mixed memory configuration — one bank is soldered and one is a SO-DIMM slot. DDR5 models top out at 32GB (16GB soldered + 16GB SO-DIMM), while DDR4 models reach 40GB (8GB soldered + 32GB SO-DIMM). The Gen 5 improved on this with two accessible SO-DIMM slots.
ThinkPad T16 Gen 3
Same two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots as the T14, but in a larger 16-inch chassis. Supports up to 64GB. Storage is a single M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 slot, up to 2TB. Adapters are 45W, 65W or 100W USB-C.
ThinkPad L14/L16 Gen 5
The L-series is Lenovo’s entry-level ThinkPad with surprisingly good upgradeability. Gen 5 models use DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM with two slots, supporting up to 64GB (L14) or 96GB (L16). These are the most cost-effective ThinkPads to upgrade.
Watch out: The L14/L16 Gen 4 uses older DDR4-3200 SO-DIMM — not DDR5. If you own a Gen 4, make sure you buy DDR4 modules.

ThinkPad X1 Carbon — Upgrade Guide
The X1 Carbon is Lenovo’s flagship ultrabook, and it prioritises thinness over upgradeability. Both Gen 11 and Gen 12 use soldered LPDDR5X that cannot be upgraded. The SSD (single M.2 2280 NVMe slot) is the only user-replaceable component.
If you need an upgradeable premium ThinkPad, look at the T14s instead — it’s nearly as thin but retains SO-DIMM slots.
ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 — The CAMM2 Pioneer
The ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 was the world’s first laptop to use LPCAMM2 memory — a new standard that’s 57% thinner than SO-DIMM but remains user-upgradeable via a screw-mounted module. A single LPCAMM2 module provides full dual-channel memory up to 64GB.
The previous P1 Gen 6 used traditional DDR5 SO-DIMM (2 slots, up to 96GB). If you need maximum capacity today, the Gen 6 supports more RAM. If you want the latest technology, the Gen 7’s CAMM2 is the future direction for Lenovo workstations.
Both generations use 140W+ USB-C PD chargers and have two M.2 2280 NVMe SSD slots.
IdeaPad and Yoga Series — Upgrade Guide
Lenovo’s consumer lines — IdeaPad and Yoga — overwhelmingly use soldered LPDDR5X memory. The SSD is typically the only upgradeable component, and many use the smaller M.2 2242 form factor rather than the standard 2280.
IdeaPad Slim 5 Gen 9: Soldered RAM (up to 32GB). M.2 2242 NVMe SSD (not 2280 — check before buying). 65–100W USB-C PD charging.
Yoga 9 2-in-1: Soldered LPDDR5X, offered at 16GB or 32GB and capped at 32GB — Lenovo’s PSREF sheets for the 14IMH9 and 14ILL10 both list it as “soldered memory, not upgradable”, so there is no 64GB option. One M.2 2242 PCIe 4.0 ×4 slot (not 2280 — measure before ordering). 65W USB-C PD charging, not 100W. It does have two Thunderbolt 4 ports, so full-speed docking is available even though nothing inside can be upgraded but the SSD.
Key warning: IdeaPad and Yoga laptops often use M.2 2242 SSDs, not the standard 2280. A 2280 drive will not fit. Check your model’s service manual before purchasing. See our M.2 size guide for more on form factor compatibility.
Legion Series — Upgrade Guide
The Legion gaming range is fully upgradeable. The Legion 5, 5 Pro, and 7 all feature two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots (up to 64GB) and two M.2 NVMe SSD slots. Charging is via USB-C PD at 140W–245W depending on the model.
Note that Legion laptops do not have Thunderbolt — they use high-speed USB-C instead. If you need Thunderbolt 4 for a docking station, the ThinkPad P-series is a better choice for a powerful Lenovo with TB4 support.

Lenovo Charger Compatibility
Most Lenovo laptops now charge over USB-C Power Delivery, but the “Slim Tip” connector is still current on high-power models. The ThinkPad P1 Gen 6 (170W or 230W), the P1 Gen 7 (135W or 170W) and the Legion 5 and Legion Pro 5 (230W or 300W) all use Slim Tip, and no USB-C charger will run them. USB-C PD charging applies to the ThinkPad T, L and X1 lines, IdeaPad and Yoga.

Lenovo Docking Station Compatibility
Going further: Lenovo part numbers are easy to confuse — the Universal Thunderbolt 4 Dock, the Workstation Dock and the Universal USB-C Dock v2 are three different products with different power and display limits. Our Lenovo dock compatibility guide maps each part number to what it actually does.
Most Intel ThinkPads in the T, X and P lines carry Thunderbolt 4. AMD ThinkPads and the E and L lines generally expose USB-C or USB4 instead — a Thunderbolt dock still works on those, but in a reduced mode without PCIe tunnelling, so check the port list for your own model. Lenovo’s own ThinkPad Universal USB-C docks work across the range, but third-party Thunderbolt 4 docks (CalDigit TS4, Anker 777) work equally well. IdeaPad, Yoga, and Legion models typically lack Thunderbolt — use a USB-C dock with DisplayPort Alt Mode or a DisplayLink dock for multi-monitor setups.

Can I upgrade the RAM in my ThinkPad X1 Carbon?
No. The X1 Carbon (Gen 11 and Gen 12) uses soldered LPDDR5X memory. The SSD is the only upgradeable component. If you need an upgradeable ThinkPad, consider the T14s — it’s similar in size but has SO-DIMM slots.
What is CAMM2 and which Lenovo laptops use it?
CAMM2 (LPCAMM2) is a new memory standard that replaces SO-DIMM. It’s thinner, faster, and remains user-upgradeable via a screw-mounted module. The ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 was the first laptop to use it. Expect more Lenovo business laptops to adopt CAMM2 through 2026.
Does my IdeaPad use 2280 or 2242 SSD?
Many IdeaPad and Yoga models use the smaller M.2 2242 form factor rather than the standard 2280. Check your specific model’s service manual — installing a 2280 SSD in a 2242 slot won’t physically fit. The model number sticker inside the battery compartment confirms the exact model.
Can I use any USB-C charger with a Lenovo laptop?
Only if the machine actually charges over USB-C. A 65W USB-C PD charger covers most ThinkPads. Legion is the exception: those use a Lenovo slim tip barrel at 230W to 330W, and some models add a secondary 140W USB-C input for light use only — a USB-C charger alone will not run one under load. The slim tip connector has not been retired; it is still what Legion and the P-series workstations use.
Which Lenovo laptops are the most upgradeable?
The ThinkPad P1 Gen 6 (2 RAM slots, 96GB max, 2 SSD slots) and Legion 7 (2 RAM slots, 32GB on the 16IRX9, 2 SSD slots) offer the most upgrade potential. For everyday business use, the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 is the best balance of upgradeability and portability.
